Tree cabling and bracing is an important part of tree service. The major importance of tree cabling and bracing is to decrease the probability that a tree will fall. To do this, we wrap large cables around your tree at about mid-to-upper canopy height, then we stretch steel cables between two or more trees or poles that are about 12 – 15 feet apart. We typically use three – four cables that range from 3/8" to 1/2" in diameter and can be as much as 100 feet long.
A very important aspect of our tree service work has to do with the safety of your trees. We help ensure that trees are properly braced and cabled for long-term protection against damage due to high winds, ice storms, lightning strikes, heavy snow loads or other natural threats.
Bracing is the practice of attaching metal braces to the major branches of a tree to keep them from splitting off due to stress. Bracing is an especially good idea for young trees. Older trees need bracing if there has been structural damage, such as cracking or splitting, the base of the tree has become hollow, or it's located in an area that is prone to storms.
We use cables and turnbuckles (safety chains) for this task, which are installed using special equipment on our trucks. Once they're attached at both ends of each brace with turnbuckles, we attach safety chains between braces along the length of the tree trunk to provide additional support and resistance against wind forces exerted on the branch. Our team follows industry standards set by organizations like International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and American National Standards Institute.
After cabling or bracing, the tree is inspected every few years using various methods to make sure it remains safe. Many cabling techniques can be used for different situations. For example, if an older tree has become top heavy due to decay or structural damage at its base, cables are attached around the trunk's circumference at points equidistant from the center of gravity. If a young tree needs bracing to develop strength before winds reach full speed, cables are wrapped around each major branch near where they join the trunk. The use of turnbuckles helps us achieve proper sizing for each cable so that there is no danger of over-cinching brace straps or slings.
